Self-Competition and Entrepreneurship
The only real competition is yourself. In the age of AI, where execution is increasingly commoditized, what wins is depth: secrets learned by going somewhere nobody else thought to look.

The Comparison Trap
"Comparison is how ambitious people procrastinate." Tracking competitors, checking LinkedIn, benchmarking against peers: it feels productive because it involves the same subject matter. But your actual work stays untouched.
Tracking competitors used to make strategic sense when execution was hard. Who shipped first, who priced lower, who hired the sales rep you wanted. The race was about execution, and watching was part of the playbook.
AI Changed the Game
AI killed the logic of competitive monitoring. Forty minutes vs. six weeks: anyone can build the obvious thing now. When execution is free:
- The surface is drowning in adequate
- The playbook everyone studies is already a commodity
- There's nothing left worth copying
What wins now are secrets. Things learned by going somewhere nobody else thought to look:
- A distribution channel that works because you understand a specific buyer's workflow
- A technical decision that seems wrong until you've spent months inside the problem
Two Types of Founders
Founder A: Has the competitor slide memorized. Knows the Gartner quadrant. Can recite every feature comparison. Ask why Customer #3 almost churned, and they blink. "Churn's within benchmark ranges." Knows the map but has never been to the territory.
Founder B: Interrupts your question because she's been thinking about it for 400 hours. Has a take on some pricing quirk in construction bidding that sounds obscure, shouldn't matter, and turns out to be the main insight. She found a crevice nobody else entered and kept going. Ask about competitors, and she stares like you asked about the weather. She's somewhere they can't see.
"Founders still tracking competitors are playing a finished game. The best companies are icebergs; you can't build one by watching what others ship."
Applying This to Learning
Even as an investor: stop reading the same ten newsletters everyone else reads. Start cloning repos, deconstructing frameworks, rebuilding things from scratch to understand how they actually work, before the consensus forms. The source describes learning more about where AI infra is heading in a few hours of hands-on exploration than from hearing the same three tropes from peers.
The Superficial Leaderboard
There will always be funding rounds, feature launches, and press coverage. Don't let it define you. Find your own game.
